Board Treasurer for Nonprofit Organization

Sojourners’ Place – Board Treasurer position Sojourners’ Place, a Wilmington DE nonprofit, was established in 1991. Its mission is to assist homeless men and women on their journey to self-sufficiency by delivering comprehensive, case-managed services, addressing substance use disorders, mental health needs, legal challenges, and employment.  Our website is www.sojournersplace.org.

Through a unique case management model inspired by 12-step recovery, Sojourners’ Place has become a cornerstone of Delaware’s human services sector. It strives to break the cycle of poverty, homelessness, and addiction, equipping residents with the tools for independence and sobriety. Residents may remain at Sojourners’ Place as long as needed, free of charge, to receive necessary training, achieve employment, secure permanent housing, and become self-sufficient. Our primary goal is not just giving Hope for the Homeless, but to also provide a Light for the Journey.

The success of our program is contingent upon the commitment of the individual and the level of services we provide. More than 85% of the individuals who come through our doors achieve the goals set at the time of intake. The success of the organization over the years can be attributed to the support of the community, religious organizations, and foundation and government funding.

Most importantly, it is an organization where employees and volunteers are fully engaged and feel valued. Members of the Board of Directors provide leadership, business skills, and support for the program. Sojourners’ Place is seeking a dynamic board member with experience in finance, budgeting, and working with inside and outside accountants.

The functions of the Treasurer include: • Review of accounting entries in QuickBooks to ensure accuracy of balance sheet and income statement.  Review organization of QuickBooks G/L codes for reporting purposes. • Review bank accounts and transfer funds as needed. • Provide oversight for payroll processing and IRS tax compliance via ADP. • Ongoing review of accounts payable in conjunction with cash balances. • Review documentation and co-sign checks > $500. • Prepare financial reports for monthly Board meetings.  Prepare summary of financial status, cash flow report and P&L report. • Prepare annual budget. • Prepare financials for grant applications. Prepare a grant summary report that identifies major expense areas in the budget, and review with the board Finance committee before submittal.  Keep grant accounting. • Work with outside auditors on the annual audit.

We would like someone who: • Has experience in nonprofit financial management, fundraising, and strategic planning, • Is comfortable working with Board members and staff in day-to-day functions. • Shows enthusiasm for Sojourners’ Place mission, and has a strong desire to help those who are less fortunate regain their lives and become independent. • Thinks strategically while managing current year finances. The Board of Directors meets monthly in person or virtually.

Board members are encouraged to participate in meetings, and contribute in their areas of expertise. Our members are actively engaged in our fundraising events.

This is a volunteer leadership position, but it pays a stipend, as there are more associated duties than with the other Board positions. If you are interested in learning more about this position, please contact our Board Chair Roman Kalpas via email: rkalpas@sojournersplace.org.
